Leading Teacher
Kate Lawry
I have had the privilege of teaching in a variety of educational settings, including mainstream Department of Education schools, residential outdoor schools, and early intervention programs for young people at risk. I have always been enthusiastic about educating in the outdoors, as I feel natural places are a powerful vehicle that can help young people learn about themselves, others, and the environment.
I landed a single-term contract at The School for Student Leadership (SSL) in 2023 and loved the school so much that I packed up my life on the Mornington Peninsula and moved to Bright.
I love working at SSL, as it allows me to work alongside great staff and young people from across Victoria with different backgrounds, stories, and experiences. The 9-week program allows for strong and authentic relationships to be built. No student or day is the same at SSL, and that is why working here is so enjoyable. The learning community encourages young people to stretch themselves, think more deeply about the role they want to play within communities, and supports them to recognise and celebrate their full potential.
I value the important relationships in my life, and when I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends on both the Mornington Peninsula and in the Northeast region of Victoria. I am lucky to have access to and participate in many great activities that shape the person I am and the way I see the world. I enjoy mountain bike riding, trail running, bluebird days in the snow, paddling, and exploring natural places on foot.
